Abstract

The fact that consumption patterns have changed during the last decades with an increase of the demand of lightly preserved products has given L. monocytogenes the possibility of being included in the group of the emerging foodborne agents. Although few reports demonstrate the occurrence of foodborne listeriosis after consumption of seafood products the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in such food items has been world-wide reported. Additionally, L. monocytogenes has been often detected in fishery plants confirming this pathogen as a major concern of the seafood industry. In this manuscript we review basic knowledges about the relation between L. monocytogenes and seafood products.
