This study first examines the care of the elderly in an home setting in Nigeria. Second, it discusses the lack of quality care resulting in abuse, neglect and abandonment. Existing research on abuse is presented followed by the study that found the prevalence of abandonment and neglect in 100 elderly slum dwellers. Results indicated physical, economic and emotional neglect. Finally, the study presents recommendations for future research and training on the care of the elderly.
