Abstract
The study explores the adoption of improved cassava varieties among smallholder farmers in Ghana. The improved cassava varieties introduced to farmers in the study area (Sekyere South district, Ghana) are Bankye hemaa and Bankye afisiafi. The effects of the determinants of the extent of adoption are analysed with the Tobit Model. The empirical results indicate that age and education of the farmer, household size, membership of farmer-based organization, access to credit tend to have positive influence on the extent of adoption of improved cassava varieties by farmers. The age of the farmer and location-level specific effects tend to be negatively related to the extent of adoption of the improved cassava varieties. It is recommended that policy-makers create an enabling environment for farmers to join farmer-based organizations. Farmers must be provided frequent education and training on technology adoption.
