Abstract

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic face surgeries nowadays with considerable effect on physical and mental health. The current study was done to compare the health-related Quality of Life (QOL) before and after rhinoplasty. This descriptive-analytical study was a quasi-experimental before and after study which involved patients who presented to Imam Khomeini university hospital (governmental and referral hospital), Kermanshah, Iran for rhinoplasty in 2015. The sampling method was of convenience method. The patient’s QOL was measured twice, once 1 week before rhinoplasty and once again 6 months after rhinoplasty. Demographic data were gathered using a checklist and included age, gender and marital status. The QOL was determined using the Persian version of the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) Health Survey. The data were entered into the SPSS Software (Ver. 16.0) and were analyzed. The significance level was set at 0.05. Fifty seven patients were studied. Mean±SD age of the sample was 25.72 ±4.92 years. There were 52 females (91.2%) and five males (8.8%). Single patients and those who underwent rhinoplasty mainly for aesthetic reasons comprised the highest proportion of the studied patients. The overall scores of SF-36 and its components showed significant improvement (p<0.05) in all patients except in those for whom rhinoplasty was done for corrective reasons. These improvements were more prominent in mental health component. Also age showed significant correlation (p<0.05) with mental health after surgery, physical functioning after surgery, general health before surgery, vitality after surgery and social functioning before surgery. We observed significant improvements in all QOL components, especially mental health in females, singles and those who requested rhinoplasty for aesthetic purposes.
