Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent complication among diabetic patients, often leading to end‐stage renal disease and increased mortality. Understanding its prevalence and associated risk factors is essential for early detection and preventive measures. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CKD among diabetic patients and identify the major risk factors contributing to its onset. A cross‐sectional study was conducted with a sample size of 300 diabetic patients. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires, medical record reviews and laboratory tests. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was used to diagnose CKD. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify the risk factors associated with CKD in this population. The prevalence of CKD among the studied diabetic patients was 30%. Risk factors significantly associated with CKD included hypertension (OR = 3.2, 95% CI: 2.1‐4.8), poor glycemic control denoted by HbA1c levels >8% (OR = 2.8, 95% CI: 1.8‐4.5) and duration of diabetes >10 years (OR = 2.5, 95% CI: 1.6‐3.9). CKD is notably prevalent among diabetic patients, emphasizing the need for regular renal function assessments. Specific risk factors identified in this study can guide clinicians in devising targeted interventions for at‐risk diabetic patients, thus potentially reducing the burden of CKD.
