Abstract

Radiation‐induced mucositis and skin reactions are prevalent side effects in oncology patients, often compromising their therapeutic experience and overall quality of life. While Gentian Violet has been a traditional remedy for various dermal and mucosal issues, its potential in managing radiation‐induced conditions, especially within the Konkan region, is understudied. Objective: The primary aim is to understand Gentian Violet's efficacy and cost‐benefit in treating radiotherapy‐associated mucositis and skin reactions within a tertiary care setting in Konkan. A total of 200 patients undergoing radiotherapy were enrolled in this prospective observational study. They were equally split into two groups: one receiving standard care and the other administered Gentian Violet for their conditions. Assessment parameters included mucositis and skin reaction severity (using recognized scales), patient‐reported discomfort, cost of treatment and overall patient satisfaction. The Gentian Violet cohort displayed a markedly decreased intensity in both mucositis and skin reactions compared to their counterparts on standard care. Additionally, the treatment cost for the Gentian Violet group was considerably lower, contributing to increased patient satisfaction owing to diminished symptom distress and economical therapy. In a Konkanbased tertiary care setup, Gentian Violet not only showcased therapeutic benefits for mucositis and skin reactions post‐radiotherapy but also highlighted its cost‐effectiveness, advocating its broader inclusion in therapy regimens.
