Effect of Duloxetine on Succinylcholine Induced Postoperative Myalgia in Patients Undergoing Surgery Under General Anaesthesia‐ A Prospective Randomized Double Blinded Place Bo‐Controlled Study

Abstract
Succinylcholine is a neuromuscular blockade used to facilitate endotracheal intubation during general anesthesia. Fasciculations and post operative myalgia (POM) are its well known side effects. Duloxetine is found to be effective against these fasciculations and myalgia. Seventy four patients were randomized into two groups. 2 hrs prior to induction of general anesthesia, 37 patients each received oral 30 mg duloxetine (Group D) or similar oral starch capsule (Group C). Fasciculations and POM were recorded. Incidence of fasciculations was 72.97 vs. 91.87% in group D vs group C (p‐value = 0.004) but severity was not significant in the groups. Incidence of post operative myalgia was 24.32 vs. 54% in group D vs group C (p‐value = 0.004) but the severity was not significant between the groups. Oral 30 mg Duloxetine 2 hrs prior to induction of general anaesthesia reduces the incidence of succinylcholine induced fasciculation and POM.
