A Cost variation analysis of Generic and Branded Antihypertensive Drugs Available in Indian Market: An Economic Perspective

Abstract

Cost variation analysis of generic and branded anti‐hypertensive drugs available in indian market: An economic perspective. The cost of different brands of commonly used anti‐hypertensive drugs was sorted out by referring latest CIMS and IDR for branded drugs and Jan aushadhi and dava India for generic drugs. The cost of 10 dosage forms (Tablets/capsules) in INR of each brand, Cost Ratio and Percentage Cost Variation were calculated. Cost variation analysis of Few groups of drugs are discussed below‐Generic and branded drug Ramipril (5mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 630% (comparison of minimum price of generic and branded) and 600% (comparison of maximum price of generic and branded) Generic and branded drug losartan (50mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 170% and 410%. Generic drug propanolol (40mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 330% while for branded drug metoprolol shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 500%. Generic and branded drug Amlodipine (5mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 170% and 450%. Generic drug Hydrochlorothiazide (12.5mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 80% while for branded drug metoprolol shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 790%. Generic and branded drug Isosorbide Mononitrate (2.6 mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 230% and 240%. Among commonly used Fixed does combinations in antihypertensives, Generic drug Amlodipine+Atenolol (5+50 mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 200% while for branded drug Telmisartan+Hydrochlorthiazide (40+12.5 mg-1) shows maximum percentage of cost variation in price by 960%. The most prevalent cardiovascular illness is hypertension, which requires long‐term medication use. Patients will pay more for their therapy unnecessarily if a pricey brand is suggested. The expensive brand of the identical generic drug has been shown to be in no way superior to its more affordable alternative. Therefore, it is ideal if the prescriptions are prescribed in generic form to help patients save money and increase compliance.
