Abstract

Cardiac structural and functional abnormalities are noted in liver cirrhosis, collectively termed cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM). The study aimed to determine CCM frequency in cirrhosis patients and its correlation with the Model for End‐Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score. Top of Form. Fifty cirrhosis patients were grouped by MELD scores (<9, 10‐19, >20). Cardiac assessment via Doppler echocardiography examined dysfunction and its MELD correlation. Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM) and diastolic dysfunction (DD) occurred in 55% and 35% of patients, respectively. Prolonged corrected QT interval (QTc), isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) and deceleration time (DT) were observed in 82, 59 and 50%, respectively. Significantly, CCM, DD and extended QTc, IVRT and DT correlated with the MELD score (p‐values <0.05). Cirrhosis patients show cardiac compromise, especially cirrhotic cardiomyopathy and diastolic dysfunction, correlating with MELD score. MELD predicts cardiac dysfunction in cirrhosis.
