Abstract

The goal of this article is to describe a new approach to a content search and delivery mechanism for a Java programming course. This approach is based on the concept of creating collaborative repository of learning objects, each of which consists of the core material, code examples, supplementary notes, comments and review questions. The learning objects are composed out of the instructor`s original material as well as material searched from other repositories and XML-based documents available on the Web. The developed search engine allow learners to be more concerned with retrieving information about a Java programming subject more than with retrieving data, which satisfy a given query. When searching information about a subject (e.g. Java object oriented programming) the search engine must interpret the metadata of the various available learning objects and rank them according to a degree of relevance to the learner`s query. The primary goal is to retrieve all the learning objects, which are relevant to a learner`s query while retrieving as few non-relevant objects as possible. The focus of this study is to develop a more powerful search engine by utilizing XML and associated technologies. This will be an expansion on our previous work that shows how XML can be used to improve accuracy in focused searches. The main purpose is to broaden the scope in order to improve Internet searches, on the whole, by developing algorithms and interfaces that encourage better document rankings and more meaningful results of XML documents.
