Abstract

The electrical power system is to generate electrical power and distribute that power to the end‐user device at an acceptable voltage. Power quality is one of the most important issues emerging in the current environment. With the increasing use of non‐linear equipment in power systems, it has become necessary to investigate power quality issues as all electrical items often fail when different types of power quality problems arise. The biggest reason for the deterioration of power quality is the non‐linearity in loads that attract harmonics. Because of this nonlinearity, all loads cause distortions in the voltage and current waveform. Some of the power quality issues, such as voltage sags, voltage swells, voltage spikes, harmonic distortion, power interruptions and outages, Measurements were made to assess power quality problems in the industry. The data measurement is measured effectively from the transformers by using the Fluke power quality and energy analyzer. Based on the data, various analyses have been performed to identify the level of power quality problems. The fluke power quality analyst analyzed the poor power factor of two transformers and observed high current harmonic distortion. The Distributed Static Synchronous Compensator (D‐STATCOM) Simulink model was developed for testing systems and analyzed simulation results before and after the insertion of D‐STATCOM. The simulation results show an improved power factor and harmonics using the filter design with D‐STATCOM. Many methods can be used to reduce power quality issues but Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices are the most suitable solution. So this thesis aims to reduce the power quality problem in the Ethio Leather Industry Company (ELICO) case by using suitable Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices.
