Antipsychotics are commonly prescribed for a variety of psychiatric disorders which require prolonged treatment. If a costly brand is prescribed, it reduces patient compliance, especially in the lower socio‐economic groups. Awareness about the cost variation among different brands will guide an economically effective prescription by the treating physician. The study was done in the department of pharmacology of a teaching hospital in central India. Cost of a particular drug (cost per 10 tablets), in the same strength and dosage forms being manufactured by different companies was obtained from “current index of medical specialties” (CIMS) latest edition April‐June 2023 (update 2) and “Indian drug review” (IDR) latest edition 2023 issue 1. The difference between the maximum and minimum costs of the same drug manufactured by different pharmaceutical companies was calculated. The percentage cost variation and cost ratio were then calculated for each drug. Prices of total 17 drugs were analyzed out of which 14 drugs were single (monotherapy) and 3 drugs were in the form of fixed dose combinations. The percentage variation in the cost was above 100% with most of the commonly used antipsychotic drugs like haloperidol 5 mg tablet (463%), risperidone 1 mg tablet (1119%), chlorpromazine 50 mg tablet (435.6%), aripiprazole 15 mg tablet (380%), flupenthixol 1 mg tablet (110.8%), olanzapine 20 mg tablet (175%), amisulpride 200 mg tablet (240%), quetiapine 200 mg tablet (149%). There is significant cost variation among the various brands of antipsychotic drugs. More psychiatric drugs need to be included under national list of essential medicines and DPCO (drug price control order) so that there can be a price control on different brands of oral antipsychotic drugs.
