Perception of Causes and Management of Dysmenorrhoea among Adolescent Girls in Government Secondary School Atu, Calabar South Local Government Area

Abstract

This study was designated to investigate the perception of causes and management of dysmenorrhoea among adolescent girls in government secondary school, Atu, Calabar South local government area. To facilitate the study, three objectives and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Related literature was reviewed based on the research variable. Survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study was made up of all adolescent girls in Government Secondary School, Atu, numbering about nine hundred and twenty three. A sample size of one hundred and fifty subjects obtained through stratified random sampling techniques formed the sample size for the study. The collection of data was through the questionnaire, the three research questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages while the hypothesis was analyzed using contingency Chi-square analysis. Result of analysis showed that: 27(18%) of the respondents identified fatigue as the clinical manifestation of dysmenorrhoea among adolescent girls, 25(16.7%) identified headache, 12(8%) identified backache as the symptom, 13(8.7%) identified dizziness as the symptom, 15(10%) identified anorexia, 34(22.6%) identified abdominal distention, 14(9.3%) identified diarrhoea, while 10(6.7%) identified vomiting as the clinical manifestation of dysmenorrhoea among adolescent girls. It was recommended among others that parent should also try as much as possible to educate their children especially the girls concerning painful menstruation and the precautionary measures to take as to avoid the causes of dysmenorrhoea. This will go a long way to dispel ignorance and lack of knowledge towards dysmenorrhoea and reproductive health among adolescence.
