Effect of alcohol-kolanut interaction on brain metabolism in wistar albino rats was studied. Total 30 wistar albino rats were divided into 6 groups. Group 1 was the control, while groups through 6 were treated with alcohol (10%v/v), kolanut extracts, caffeine, alcohol and kolanut and alcohol and caffeine respectively. The experiment lasted for 21 days. Glucose oxidase, adenylate deaminase and glutamine synthetase were assayed. The results showed that alcohol-kolanut interaction decreased glucose oxidase, adenylate deaminase and glutamine synthetase in the nervous tissue, resulting in a decreased energy (ATP) production, ionic transport and decreased neuronal processes resulting in induced apoptosis of insulin-stimulated neuronal cells, leading to brain growth retardation, DNA damage and may contribute to neuronal loss.
