Intertrochanteric fracture is one of the most devastating injuries in the elderly. Being a intramedullary load sharing device, PFN helps in early postoperative mobilization, weight bearing and ultimately the early fracture union. Four five present study was aimed to study efficacy of proximal femoral nail in the treatment of intertrochanteric femoral fractures at a tertiary hospital. Present study was single‐center, prospective, observational study, conducted in patients above 20 years of age, with proximal femoral fractures which includes trochanteric fractures and trochanteric fractures with subtrochanteric extension, underwent proximal femoral nail treatment. In our study, most of the patients were between 21‐40 years (50%). There were 15 male and 5 female patients. Most of the cases were Type I and II fractures as per Boyd‐Griffin Classification. All the cases were operated within 48 hrs of injury the average time for surgery was 105 min. (range 90‐140 min). Average duration of hospital stay was 14 days. (range 12‐28 days). In majority of cases, union was noted in 17‐20 weeks (45%) and at 13‐16 weeks (25%). Anatomical abnormalities noted were Restriction of hip ROM (15%) Shortening >1 cm (5%) and Restriction of knee ROM (5%). As per anatomical results, 55% of cases had excellent results, 30% of the cases had good results, 10% had fair results, 5% had poor result. Functional results were assessed by Harris Hip scoring system. Excellent results were noted in 10 cases, good in 6 cases, fair in 3 cases and poor in 1 case PFN is a reliable implant for proximal femoral fractures, leading to high rate of bone union restoring the anatomical alignment and reduced chance of implant failure or deformities.
