Abstract

In intensive care unit (ICU) the nutritional status is a key factor in the ability to overcome critical diseases and to improve clinical outcomes. The purpose of nutrition screening is to identify individuals with malnutrition or those at risk for malnutrition to achieve a more comprehensive nutritional assessment and support. Present study was aimed to assess nutritional intake in adult intensive care unit patients at a tertiary hospital. Material and Present study was single‐center, prospective, observational study, conducted in patients of age >18 years, either gender, admitted in the ICU and stayed for more than 24 hrs. In present study, among 162 patients studied, majority were male (61.23%), admitted due to medical reasons (71.6%). Mean age of study population was 61.3±13.9 years and mean BMI was 23.5±3.9 kg mG2. Among study population, common comorbidities were hypertension (45.06%), diabetes mellitus (42.59%), cardiovascular disease (33.95%), chronic renal failure (33.33%) and coronary artery disease/ heart failure (27.78%). Majority patients were admitted due to causes related to respiratory system (31.48%), gastrointestinal system (19.75%), postoperative (14.2%), renal system (14.2%) and cardiovascular system (9.26%). In patients with mnutric score >5, increased severity of illness (in terms of SOFA score and Apache II score), prolonged ICU stay and less ventilator free days were observed as compared to mnutric score <4, difference was statistically significant. Higher Nutric scores were is associated with increased mortality and prolonged ICU length of stay, such patients may get benefit from timely aggressive nutrition therapy.
