Abstract

Asphyxia is a major cause of death in hanging, drowning etc. where there is interruption in respiratory function. As autopsy surgeons, we come across many such cases in day to day practice. Sometimes it become difficult to detect asphyxia, specially in cases of hanging where time of suspension is very less and ligature mark is not detectable. In cases of partial hanging, drowning, smothering, gagging etc. external signs are difficult to identify in most of the time. So, in this study, we have tried to find out the cardinal signs of asphyxia so as to declare it.
