Flood is a common phenomenon in Bangladesh. Flood causes a huge damage, immeasurable sufferings, death and destruction both in rural and urban areas. The present study aims to find out different socioeconomic groups among the flood affected people, extent of flooding, housing damage in relation to depth and duration of flooding and house types and also the relationship between socioeconomic condition and housing damage. For the purpose of the study160 randomly selected respondents were interviewed through using an interview schedule. This study was carried out in the city of Narayangonj during July to September in 1999. It was found from the study that most of the pucca house dwellers belong to middle income group (98.3%) and all the people of low-income group lives in the kutcha houses. Accordingly types of house and damages show a significant relationship for which chi square value is 13.45 and significant at 0.05 levels. Depth of flooding on floor and house adjacent area and duration of flooding in the houses and house adjacent area in the study area were positively correlated to the damage of the houses. The urban situation and lack of coordination between urban management bodies were also found responsible for the sufferings of the people and accordingly some recommendations were made at the end of the study.
