Abstract

This paper examines the nature and extent of contemporary youth violence in the United States, recent trends in adolescent violent behavior and violent victimization of youth. Although youth violence exists in most other countries, it appears most pronounced in America. This is likely due to the unusual nexus between the easy availability of guns, urban gangs and the widespread use of illicit drugs by adolescents. While recent approaches to dealing with youth violence have had minimal impact, we conclude that prevention of violence is likely to be accomplished only by attacking the root problem, which is the oppression of children. To the extent that children engage in violent acts in response to their oppression, removal of oppressive forces will eliminate motivations for such violent adaptations.
