Abstract

As a de facto network management standard, SNMP softwares have been widely supported by most network devices. To overcome the rapidly growing management and diversified network con-nections, a network management system must be scalable and flexible. From utilizing the advantages of XML`s universal accessibility, together with the distributed technology, an XML-enabled and scal-able network management system with P2P technology is presented in this study. In our presentation, a managed network is horizontally partitioned into management domains; and vertically, the network is structured hierarchically with the management proxies in the middle. The splitting of management do-mains and distribution of management functions can effectively enhance the system scalability. With appropriate XML translations, communications and management information exchanges between management domains can be efficiently carried out over the JXTA platform, upon which Peer-to-Peer applications can be easily built.
