Abstract

Bioinformatics is the art of science that deals with storage, extraction, organization and interpretation of different biological data. It is a multidisciplinary technology that derives sources from different areas like bioengineering, molecular Biology, mathematics, statistics and Information Technology. Bioinformatics has acquired great importance in recent years due to its extreme capability of assessing proteomics and genomics data. It has become an essential component of biotechnology based product and process development. Biological data banks that are helpful to the researchers and professionals especially in the analysis of sequences, stores the information in different format and suffers from lack of standards for web-oriented applications. The eXtensible Markup Language (XML), which has emerged as a standard for structuring documents, provides solution to overcome such problems and there by integrates data and services from different data sources. This paper describes the biological programming aspects and highlights the need for XML technology in terms of data integration for bioinformatics applications.
