Death Analysis of COVID‐19 Patients Admitted to Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital of North‐Karnataka

Abstract

COVID‐19 is the newly emerged coronavirus disease with its first few cases in China and has spread in an unstoppable manner throughout world. Its causative organism is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2). It is a colossal pandemic worldwide including various parts of India resulting in several cases and a considerable number of deaths (mainly died of respiratory failure). India is one of the countries with large number of confirmed cases. This study is done to assess the death due to COVID‐19 on various parameters. Objectives: To analyse the socio‐demographic presentation and causes of deaths among COVID‐19 patients admitted in COVID dedicated tertiary care teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: A Retrospective observational analysis of the COVID‐19 patients admitted to the tertiary care teaching hospital (dedicated COVID‐19 hospital), situated in Northern most district of Karnataka surrounded by two states. The mortality records between April 2020 to March 2022 were considered for analysis under the study for COVID‐19 from medical record section. Results: Total patient managed during period were 10,492 during the study period mentioned, out of which 1,369 (13%) deaths occurred. Around 34% had deaths within 24 hrs followed by up to 7 days (43.4%). Majority of 1164 (85%) were on Oxygen. About 0.10% were on NIV, 14.80% on Incubation and 85% on Oxygen. Duration of hospital stay was found between 2 to 7 days among majority of the deaths (43.4%) followed by one day (33.8%). Also, maximum patients had more than 2 comorbidities (80.5%). There was highly significant association between co‐morbidity with age groups (p<0.0001), sex (p = 0.02). Conclusion: The present study shows that comorbidity is the risk factor for death due to COVID‐19 and were at more risk than those with no comorbidities. There was an increased number of acute MI in patients with a new diagnosis of COVID‐19.
