AB - Because the topic of religion has been neglected in the study of organizations this research examines the presence and relevance of religious elements in organizational analysis. This study conducts an interpretive diachronic analysis that encompasses the 150 years (1858-2008) of the existence of a shelter organization for children and young girls using documentation from its archives and from local newspapers to analyze the influences of religious elements on the goals structure and functioning of this organization. The results of this organizational case study indicate that the religious element which took various forms during this extended period of time was quite prevalent in this organization with religious experts assuming an increasingly central role with contributions from the state. This conclusion indicates that the religious dimension should be considered in attempts to truly understand any organization.
