AB - Research on optimization of highway alignment has been quite intensive in two past decades.
Determine the best candidate of highway alignment is one of the most complex of highway design stages
because the effect of various parameters with different impacts. Hence, in the present study, a multi-criteria
analysis methodology is proposed to determine the best highway candidate with the special focus on the cost
and safety criteria. The multi-criteria analysis methodology is based upon the analytical hierarchy process
technique which systematically transforms the performed calculations for each criterion into a series of simple
pairwise comparisons and then determines the weight of each criterion. Provided methodology in current
research is not limited to cost and safety criteria and can be upgraded to other criteria. This methodology is
carried out for a case study region in western north of Iran and therefore cost and safety criteria are obtained
for case study condition.
