Generation of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) gives rise to some serious socioeconomic and environmental burdens. Considerable amount of anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from open waste dumping sites is a major global challenge. Increasing human population and continue expansion of urban settlements, especially in developing countries are responsible for sharp increase in MSW generation. However, conventional MSW management approaches bring a lot of environmental constraints such as greenhouse gas emissions, soil pollution and groundwater contamination. Researches focusing on waste management for energy generation constitutes an integral part sustainable development. In this study, methane emissions from major landfill sites in Nigeria administrative state capitals and major cities are estimated. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) default approach is used to calculate the mass of methane emissions and the equivalent power generation potential in each of the cities is also evaluated. A total of 335.2 MW electrical power is obtained for the cities in all the geopolitical zones in the country. ER -
