The aim of this work is to study the influence of different suspension media on the eight years storage of N. gonorrhoeae strains. –70EC freezing and lyophiliztion methods were compared. This study was carried out with four N. gonorrhoeae strains, isolated from patients with gonococcal urethritis, one of them produced $-lactamase. A N. gonorrhoeae ATCC 49226 $-lactamase positive was used as a control. Tripticase Soy Broth (TSB) was used as suspension medium, supplemented with lactose, sucrose, milk or glycerol as cryoprotectives. Enzyme activity of $-lactamase produced by the strains and cell counts were determined before and after either storage method. The highest strains viability was observed in TSB medium added of glycerol 25 %, obtaining 62,7% after two years, decreasing to 30% after 8 years. Maximum viability for lyophilized strains was obtained with TSB added of lactose 6%, obtaining 85% and 64.3 % after 2 and 8 years respectively. The techniques used did not produce any modification on the enzymatic activity of the N. gonorrhoeae strains ER -
